EXHIBITOR & VENDOR
Blaft Publications is an independent publishing house based in Chennai, India. Our list includes Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, and Hausa-language pulp novels in English translation, anti-caste speculative fiction; folktales, ghostlore, graphic novels, zines and picture books about young women who are in love with monsters.
The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction Vol. 2 was published in 2010. The front cover illustration is by the mononymic artist Shyam, known for his work with Tamil and Telugu weekly magazines. The rest of the cover design is by Malavika.PC. The comic "Highway 117", originally published in 1980, was drawn by Chennai-based Jeyaraj and written by Pushpa Thangadurai (1931-2013). This artist and author collaborated on a number of works in the 1970s and 80s, including the hugely popular "My Name is Kamala", a serialised, illustrated story about sex trafficking in Delhi. The English translation is by Pritham K. Chakrvarthy.
about the artwork…
KARATE KAVITHA: TAMIL PULP FICTION ACTION SUPERSTAR
The cover for The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction Vol. 2 (2010) depicts a Yakshi (a vampire-like mythological being) drinking blood from a coconut-shaped skull. This book contained 6 translated stories, including one comic, "Highway 117." The title page and an action scene from the middle of the story are shown here, showing the motorcycle-riding, martial arts expert superhero Karate Kavitha defeating some thugs who have tied her to a chair.
This is Blaft Publications' first appearance in Thailand— and we hope, the first of many! We'd love to get in touch with translators and researchers who could tell us more about vintage pulp fiction and comics scenes in Thai and other Southeast Asian languages. Please be in touch if that's you!
We have recently launched "The Blaft Anthology of Gujarati Pulp Fiction," translated by Vishwambhari Parmar, and "The Blaft Book of Anti-Caste SF." We are also currently working on launching "The Seekers" by Gautamiputra Kamble and "Bandigoat: A Collection of Strange & Horrible Tales" by various authors.
Come visit our booth (B-04) on 25-26 October and check out our zines, paperbacks, hardcovers, tote bags and stickers!
Don’t miss our convention Saturday & Sunday 25-26 October!
