A MONTH TO LOVE

Happy February!

This month we have a jam-packed issue for you to enjoy, with incredible artistic interpretations of the theme “Ride,” which was suggested by featured artist Porszaaaa. Don’t miss our interview with this amazing up-and-coming talent as well as Sketchman Boris’ video of their chat during her visit to UNZINE 95 (both linked in the issue below).

Behind the scenes, much planning is afoot, so stay tuned this month for announcements about bkk UNZINE events and our fifth annual BKK Comics Art Festival right here at bkkunzine.com!

Our weekly Comics Club and Monday Night DRAW! events are still going strong at UNZINE 95… Every Sunday morning learn about how to make comics from our very own Sketchman Boris and on Monday evenings drop by for a free-wheeling and lively time with fellow creatives…

Enjoy the magazine!

PIGGYBACK RIDE

by PORSZAAAA

digital art

Zaii and Jin have a fun character dynamic that I always return to drawing. While working on this panel, the action isn’t fully shown— the sudden leap is not something I usually draw, as I don’t often work with action comics. This piece was a practice in exploring that kind of movement. I used closure to let the reader fill in the action between panels. The cropped panel and the implied sudden movement are part of a study on action comics, translated into a more mundane, everyday moment.

THE RIDE

by NIRUND CHUVICHEAN

digital painting

I wanted to join this topic with a feeling of fast motion forward. I used my old sketch for a quick painting.

MEOW MEOW IS TAKING A RIDE

by IMAIMDOODLES

digital painting

I imagined a ride that combines my favorite vehicles, like Volkswagen and Vespa. To spice things up, I made the rider a cat. I designed it as a mecha, firing bullets, rockets, and missiles for no reason. maybe the cat simply doesn’t know how to use it and ends up unleashing everything at once.

ONE LAST RIDE

by PADDY J DEVLIN

graphite pencil on cartridge paper

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

“Bicycle and Lines”

marker and pen

Experimenting with acrylic markers, I played around with thick and thin lines. A realistic bicycle riding around in a loose and abstract world.

“Motorcycle Amongst the Slender Seedlings”

marker and pen

The Honda motorcycle’s and the seedlings’ solid coloured lines intertwine and dance.

“Running”

marker and pen

This drawing has a slight Futurist style (1909-1918). The horse’s multiple legs display the illusion of rapid movement. The horse could also refer to the mythical 8-legged horse- Sleipner- a mystical being known for its supernatural speed and traveling abilities.

RIDE!

by SOOTH

hand drawing on paper with digital colors

I never learned how to ride a motorcycle, and I seldom find myself cycling anywhere alone. I recall enjoying tricycles immensely during my childhood; however, given the chaotic nature of Bangkok’s traffic, my family prefers that I don’t take the risk. As a result, I only ever travel as a passenger.

QUICKSAND (PREVIEW)

by J J SCOTT ILLUSTRATION

hand painted artwork used for assets for a video game developed in Unity6

This is a work-in-progress preview footage of a sprite scaling arcade game i'm developing, where the player is a lone motorcyclist taking a joyride through a desert landscape. This style of game used to be very popular in the last 80's and early 90's but as 3D polygons started to become the industry standard for rendering, they fell out of vogue. I love the idea of making a game like this that only uses scaled and stretched 2D artwork to create the illusion of 3D.

Remember to check out our Comics Club every Sunday at UNZINE 95, hosted by bkk UNZINE founder Sketchman Boris, and have fun learning about different aspects of making comics!

This month we are proud to present a short comic by Sketchman Boris himself and a look at Maredevil by new contributor Papikyo…

ON MY WAY

pen and ink

This is a two page comic that shows the stories I tell myself, a visual representation of one of my internal conversations.

This is a constant feeling I have of not knowing where my destination is. Despite that, I have a support system of friends and a peaceful environment that gives me courage to go toward my goals.

When someone asks me how I am doing, deep inside I want to answer “I’m on my way.”

MAREDEVIL

digital painting

These are comics for "Maredevil," a horse-racing game, started as a school project of mine. They introduced the unique monster world where the chaotic story unfolds, along with our protagonist "Headless Horseman," AKA Horsey.

Now he's not just headless but also horseless! What would he do next? To be continued...

Take a look at the full project here.
